Field Runners

One of the first paid apps I ever purchased, this game has managed to stand the test of time in terms of entertainment/dollar value. An incredibly addictive game in an incredibly addictive genre (Tower Defense Games), Field Runners is worth every penny.

Regardless of whether you're familiar with Tower Defense Games, the premise of Field Runners is simple. Soldiers, planes, and tanks cross a battlefield. The object of the game is to set up various defense towers to try and mow them down before they reach the other side. For every soldier you kill, you receive credits. Use these credits to upgrade your towers or build new ones. If too many enemy units make it to the other side of the iPhone screen the game is over.

With multiple maps and a few different play modes (Classic, Extended, Endless) the game provides you enough variety to keep you interested. However, it's the most basic map, the Grasslands, a vast grass field that extends from one side of the iPhone to the other, that provides the most fun. Even on Medium difficulty, the game is nearly impossible to beat. You'll find yourself spending hours, changing strategy to stop the onslaught of soldiers.

In terms of game details, the graphics and sound quality to the game are perfect. It really is a great example of how good the iPhone platform can be for games. Though there are a lot of games that try to repeat the success of Field Runners, in truth, the game is nearly impossible to improve on.
